This project fell from the sky"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The projects financed by the Interreg NEXT Poland&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;Ukraine 2021-2027 Programme have already started their implementation, and we eagerly await their upcoming results.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>However, we do not forget about the results and benefits brought by projects from the 2014-2020 Programme edition. We continue to show their achievements and hope that stories of people behind them or benefitting<br>on them will be inspiring for forthcoming initiatives in the whole Programme area.<br><br>We invite you to read!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>18 square metres. On such a patch more than 30 years ago, Jerzy Ostapczuk began his conservation work<br>at the Museum Podlaskie in Bia\u0142ystok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>As a 4th year student, I came here for a museology class and learned from a colleague: \u2018Jurek, there is a job for you. And there is a room with a telephone.\u2019 Then two more employees were hired and we managed to win one more room, a total of about 30 square metres.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s all for starters. The conservation equipment had yet to be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>The museum had no money, so there were problems buying anything. Sometimes\r\nit happened that some tools were brought from home, if someone had them. To get a piece of furniture facing, you would go all the way to a wholesaler in Warsaw and sometimes you would come back with nothing, because there was no Internet back then, and only when you got there did you realise that the pattern didn&#8217;t match the antique.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Today, in Choroszcz near Bia\u0142ystok, they have 300 square metres and equipment that is among the most modern in Poland. Jerzy shows you around the successive studios: gilding, wood conservation, fabric, leather, paper, ceramics, metal, enjoying himself like a child. He mentions the mysterious names of successive devices and tools in one breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does he enjoy the most?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>The freeze-drying chamber. This method of preservation, i.e. drying by freezing in a vacuum, is innovative, in the West too, so we have nothing to be ashamed of. In Poland, you can basically count them on the fingers of one hand.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>A magic wand? No \u00ad\u2013 a cross-border project, hard work and support from the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>This project has become such a step forward that it fell from the sky. It is a leap forward for civilisation.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>But the beginnings were not easy and the time pressure was high. They looked for a partner in Ukraine \u2013 it didn&#8217;t work out, they found one in Belarus \u2013 the Hrodna State Museum of History and Archaeology. They planned mirror activities \u2013 the same equipment, the same studios, the same specialists, although the experience was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>The Belarusians are still working with natural substances, we have been using synthetic resins since the 1990s. After several decades, however, it turns out that these synthetics are difficult to remove and it might be worth returning to more traditional methods, so we wanted to learn from each other,\u2019 explains Jerzy.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly afterwards, a pandemic and then events across the eastern border interrupted the cooperation,<br>and the museum workers from Podlasie had to complete the project on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marek Skrypko, coordinator of the&nbsp;<em>CONSART&nbsp;<\/em>project<em>,<\/em>&nbsp;believes that it was worth the challenge and is now proud<br>of the result. The once abandoned, overgrown warehouse building is now a modern Regional Centre for Research and Conservation of Artefacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>The centre is staffed by conservators from the Museum Podlaskie in Bia\u0142ystok, who had previously been involved in conservation, but did so without their headquarters, moving from branch to branch. Modern spaces and high-end equipment will allow them to do most of the conservation work themselves. We believe that our centre will not only serve the branches of the Museum Podlaskie in Bia\u0142ystok, but that it will also be a significant centre of expertise whose research and work will benefit institutions throughout the region.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The moment of the opening of the facility was strongly experienced by Dr Waldemar Wilczewski,<br>Director of the Museum Podlaskie:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"widget-quote\">\n  <blockquote class=\"widget-quote__blockquote\" style=\"max-width: 600px\">\n    <p>This is a very important event in terms of the development of our institution, the Museum Podlaskie, we are gaining a conservation workshop, a facility that is really well equipped, at the right level. This is something that we really lacked a lot.<\/p>\n    <footer class=\"widget-quote__blockquote__footer\">\n          <p><\/p>\n    <\/footer>\n  <\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Centre can now carry out research, training and consultancy in the field of protection and conservation<br>of monuments. The museum has also bought a special car for transporting valuable and fragile artefacts.<br>Thanks to a project implemented as part of the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Poland-(Belarus)-Ukraine 2014-2020, a publicly accessible database has also been created where the effects of conservation work can<br>be viewed. It can be used by researchers, students, but also simply by the region&#8217;s inhabitants and tourists.<br>The impressive results of the conservators&#8217; work can also be seen by visitors and tourists at museum exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now Mr Jerzy has only one worry \u2013 the lack of people willing to work as conservators. There are few who want to spend painstaking hours restoring antiques. However, he believes that such modern studios as they have managed to create through the project will attract talented and patient art-loving craftsmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on
