Promotes Active Living and Environmental Awareness

On June 7, the picturesque surroundings of the Bug River in Sokal (Lviv Oblast) hosted a vibrant family picnic under the slogan: “In the Rhythm of Nature. In the Rhythm of Health.” Organized by Lviv Branch Office in cooperation with several cross-border projects, the event promoted healthy lifestyles, environmental awareness, and highlighted the results of PL-UA initiatives in the region.

The event took place near the Kayaking Tourism Centre; one of the main results of the BugUnitesUs project implemented under the 2014–2020 Programme. Since its launch, the Centre has contributed to the development of the  local tourism and leisure infrastructure. The surrounding green area has become a popular venue for local community events, and its importance was clearly highlighted during the picnic. The BugUnitesUs project team supported the event by offering  kayaking rides on the Bug River, outdoor games, yoga and Zumba classes, art therapy sessions, and workshops on making healthy sweets.

The event was officially opened by Serhii Kasian, Mayor of Sokal, who presented the CleanBugRiver project, another initiative implemented in the community. The project aims to reduce the amount of pollutants discharged into the Bug River and enhance local wastewater disposal services. The project team contributed to the event with an environmental-themed theatre performance and educational games for children.

Another featured initiative was WaterWatch, an environmental project operating throughout Lviv Oblast. Its mobile mini-laboratory allowed participants to observe water purification and testing processes. Through engaging quizzes and interactive displays, participants learned interesting facts about water and its importance for human health.

The neighbouring community of Dobrotvir, known for its strong environmental engagement, also joined the event. The representatives showcased the outcomes of two projects: BugGuardians (2014–2020) and CleanBug. Both projects focused on biodiversity protection and environmental education. Visitors took part in interactive games designed to share knowledge about air quality, local greenery, and the diverse flora and fauna found in the Bug valley area.

Two projects from Volyn Oblast: ClimSafe and HydroGuard also took part in the event. These projects are focused on enhancing the capacity of emergency services in response to environmental risks. ClimSafe addresses preparedness for radiation and chemical hazards, while HydroGuard focuses on emergency response and life-saving operations on water. Project representatives presented their work and shared practical knowledge on cross-border cooperation in the field of civil protection.

One of the highlights of the picnic was the Wheel of Fortune, where visitors answered questions about PL-UA Programme, the European Union, and ongoing projects to win small prizes. The activity was both educational and fun, especially for families with children.

The Family Picnic in Sokal was more than just a day of entertainment; it served as an opportunity to showcase the positive impact of EU-supported cross-border cooperation. It brought together project teams, local authorities, and community members in a shared effort to promote health, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development.
