Programme in numbers: 133.27 km of water and sewerage network

Programme in numbers: 133.27 km of water and sewerage network

16.04.2026

One might think that access to clean water and a functioning sewerage system is a given… However, many areas along the Polish-Ukrainian border still lack modern water and sanitation infrastructure. This means not only more difficult access to safe drinking water, but also an increased risk of environmental pollution. And what requires particular attention and care is the protection of rivers and groundwater from pollution.

As part of the 18 projects being implemented under specific objective 1.2 of the ENVIRONMENT Priority, protection measures will be implemented along various sections of at least 12 rivers, including important watercourses such as the San, Bug, Czarna Hańcza, Dniester, and Styr.

Awareness of the seriousness of the problem is growing both among residents of the border region and among the institutions responsible for water management, as reflected in the projects being implemented under the Programme,  which are aimed at reducing existing risks and protecting aquatic ecosystems, including through the construction or modernisation of water and sewerage infrastructure.

Thanks to the support of the Programme:

108 km of sewerage network will be built or upgraded

25.4 km of water supply network will be built or upgraded

The projects that include the above measures are: WATER, EcoReserve, SewageLink, EcoSolution, CleanUP, Water4Life, EcoLinks, CleanWater, AquaForce, PACT, RiverCare, CleanBugRiver, WaterProtect, WaterWise, GoodWater, Interreg4Water, SafeSewerage and IFSynergy.

What results can we expect?

  • improved sanitation
  • improved living standards
  • increased access to drinking water and improved water quality
  • reduced disparities between regions in the Polish-Ukrainian border area
  • protection of the natural environment, aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity, raising public awareness of nature-based solutions
