Water is fascinating, and there is so much to learn about its preservation. That is why we organised a picnic devoted to water in Ternopil’s Shevchenko Park to explore the topic and introduce visitors to the Programme and its projects.
Our Lviv Branch Office and Regional Contact Point in Ternopil Oblast organised the event, which was addressed to Ternopil residents, who turned out in large numbers for the picnic. Participants learned about water management, protecting water resources, and the water treatment process. They also had a chance to learn about water-related projects implemented under the ENVIRONMENT priority of the Programme.
Water utilities – our project partners – are often referred to as “invisible”, as most people notice their work only when something goes wrong, when the water supply is interrupted. The picnic gave an opportunity to showcase the important work they do, especially through our projects: WATER and CleanUP in Ternopil and PACT in Zalishchyky (Ternopil Oblast). It was also a chance to highlight an important message: while public utilities manage water resources, saving water is everyone’s responsibility.
How can this message be conveyed to both children and adults? As part of the event, participants could take part in a water-themed quest, completing a series of challenges. Visitors could also step into a real drinking water laboratory, watch a demonstration of specialised vehicles used by the local water utility. Project representatives actively educate the participants, answering questions and giving explanations. But it was not the only chance to improve one’s level of knowledge. Everyone could test their knowledge of the European Union and learn more about our Programme by playing the Wheel of Fortune. Correct answers earned prizes and sweet treats!
“Picnic by the Water” drew attention to important issues and helped participants understand how many processes are involved in something as ordinary as a glass of water. It also highlighted how much our small everyday actions can matter when it comes to saving water.
