Celebrating Water in Rivne: Students explore the importance of water

06.10.2025

During Water Picnic organised by the PL-UA Programme high school students from Rivne learned about the importance of water in three key areas – human health, city life, and life of the planet.

A picnic was organised on 26 September in the Rivne historical reconstruction park “Ostvytsia”. Several locally based PL-UA projects contributed to the event, including WATER and AquaForce projects, which focus on improving drinking water quality and wastewater treatment, and HealthyHeart project, which seeks to enhance medical services.

These projects are doing valuable work by upgrading water supply and sewage systems, purchasing high-tech medical equipment, and training healthcare professionals. We wanted the community, especially young people, to learn more about these initiatives and about water in general – a topic that connects them all – said Olha Yutovets, Head of the Department of International Cooperation and European Integration of the Rivne Oblast State Administration.

Representatives from these projects engaged with teenagers, speaking about their work, sharing interesting facts about water, and playing a “true or false” game. Students competed in quests, experimented with the ebru technique of water painting, and explored water through hands-on science experiments. They also learned how to bake buns in a traditional oven and prepare herbal tea. Many students enjoyed spinning the “wheel of fortune” for a chance to win prizes by answering questions about the Programme and the EU.

Thank you for such an atmospheric gathering at Ostvytsia – it was very inspiring! I was especially amazed by the fact that it takes two thousand liters of water to produce a single cutlet. After that, you start seeing everyday things differently – shared Daria Dzhumlyha, a student of Rivne Lyceum No. 1.

This picnic is part of a series of open events organised by our Programme in the border regions of both countries. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements!
