We invite you to meet the winners of the ‘Our Backyard’ competition. As part of the series, we will present the 13 best projects from Poland and Ukraine. Each one includes an original description of the work carried out and photographic or/and film documentation.

🌻‘Under the Catalpa Tree’ project

Participants: pupils, age 16–18
Author’s description of the project:
Four students aged 16–18 with disabilities took part in the project.
🧑🌾 What activities did we carry out within this project?
1/ The pupils chose a spot for a flowerbed under a large catalpa tree growing next to the UNICEF Special School Complex in Rzeszów.
2/ They cleared the area of leaves and marked out the shape of the flowerbed.
3/ The following day, they planted a selection of plants that can thrive in partial shade, including Brunnera, columbines and tulips, which will have time to bloom before the catalpa’s leaves unfurl.
4/ After planting, the surface of the flowerbed was covered with bark, insect hotels were set up, and mini hotels made by the pupils in colourful cups were tied to the branches.
