Urban green areas can solve multiple problems that cities face, such as air pollution, the urban heat island effect, and the decline of biodiversity due to the disappearance of natural habitats and ecosystems. However, the proportion of green areas available for public use in many cities is often insufficient. For instance, in Łęczna (Poland) this proportion is only 4.7%, while in Kovel (Ukraine) – it is a mere 1%.
The primary objective of the GreenAction project is to prevent, mitigate, and counteract the effects of climate change, as well as to protect, preserve, and enhance biological diversity. The project aims to improve the quality of life for residents by creating nature- and climate-friendly elements of green infrastructure in Łęczna and Kovel. In Łęczna, the project will focus on revitalizing riverside areas, the slopes surrounding the Old Town, Podzamcze Park, and the former granary building. Additionally, the arrangement of the Świnka River valley area will be conducted. In Kovel, planned activities include new plantings, the construction of recreational architectural elements in revitalized areas, and the revitalization of Lesya Ukrainka Central Park, Taras Shevchenko Park, and a green area adjacent to the Center for Dialogue of Cultures, along with nerby riverside areas. To promote awareness and encourage appropriate behaviour regarding climate and biodiversity protection, the project will conduct an informational and educational campaign, ecological picnics in Łęczna and Kovel and two conferences.
The GreenAction project will help to develop green infrastructure in Łęczna and Kovel and contribute to the social, ecological, and tourist attractiveness of both cities. It will strengthen cross-border cooperation and foster people-to-people contacts.
