The purpose of wastewater treatment is to receive wastewater that can be discharged into the environment while causing the least possible water pollution or to obtain wastewater that can be reused. However, poor technical condition of existing sewage collectors can be a threat for the cities. Failures and numerous leaks cause groundwater pollution and olfactory inconvenience for the residents. Infiltration of sewage from leaky sewers system into the ground causes direct threat of river contamination. Moreover, overgrowth of shrub and tree roots into sewer pipes cause disruptions in sewage flow, enlarging leaks and posing a direct threat of damage collector pipe leading to ecological disaster.
The cities of Lutsk and Białystok, which are implemented the project are aware of these problems. The overall objective of the project is to reduce environmental threats especially related to river pollution and contribute to the preservation of environment through conducting tasks for safe functioning of sewage systems in Lutsk and Białystok. It will be achieved through modernisation of sewage collectors located in densely populated residential districts of Lutsk and Białystok near the Styr River and Biała River and purchase of sewerage equipment for timely detection of problems and monitoring of the sewage systems. Also the capacity building activities for partners’ personnel are planned as well as multilateral educational and promotional activities such as cross-border campaign “Sewerage is not a garbage bin” and a creation of Ecospace in Lutsk.
The project is a comprehensive solution contributing to safety of sewage systems in Lutsk and Białystok, beneficial to people and environment.
