For many years, road infrastructure along the Polish–Ukrainian border has failed to keep pace with the growing volume of passenger and freight traffic. Worn road surfaces, a lack of coherent connections, and difficult access to border crossings extend travel times and lead to the formation of queues at the border. As a result, the mobility of residents is limited and the attractiveness of these regions for investors is clearly declining.
The DriveConnect project addresses these challenges through the modernization of key road sections in the Lviv, Zakarpattya, and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblasts (О141002 Nahirne–Dobromyl, H 13 Lviv–Sambir–Uzhhorod, C091505 Gerynya–Bolekhiv), as well as the expansion of Podkarpackie Voivodeship Road No. 890 on the Polish side. The scope of works includes strengthening and leveling road surfaces, improving drainage, constructing sidewalks and cycling infrastructure, and upgrading road signage. In addition, an intelligent traffic management system will be implemented on one of the Ukrainian sections, enabling real-time monitoring of traffic conditions. The project will be complemented by joint training sessions, exchange of experience, and promotional activities.
The implementation of the investment will bring numerous benefits to both local communities and cross-border road users. Traffic flow in the border area will be improved, travel times on the modernized roads will be reduced, and road safety will increase. The project will also enable fuller use of existing transport corridors, including the EU–Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, and will enhance transport accessibility for communities on both sides of the border.
