The consequences of climate change know no borders. This is a common problem for both Poland and Ukraine, which suffer equally from sudden floods and prolonged droughts and high temperatures. It is necessary to develop a common concept for popularising and implementing measures to adapt to these changes in order to reduce the risk of natural disasters and create comfortable conditions for people.
The aim of the project is to popularise innovative solutions in the Ukrainian and Polish society and to introduce pilot climate change adaptation measures, establish cross-border cooperation, training events, and create scientific and educational climate change adaptation centres on the basis of the Botanical Gardens of Uzhhorod National University (UNU) and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS).
A jointly developed concept for the popularisation and implementation of climate change adaptation in urban planning and construction will be prepared. It will benefit territorial communities in both countries, homeowners and farmers. In turn, the inhabitants of the partner cities are the recipients of pilot climate change adaptation measures, new scientific and educational centres to popularise knowledge on the subject. The creation of an environmental monitoring system in both cities will include laboratories in both botanical gardens with mobile devices to measure various indicators. On the Ukrainian side, a GIS map of Uzhhorod will be created to identify the biggest threats that require rapid action. On the Polish side, an upgrade and expansion of the existing monitoring system for conditions in the botanical garden will be carried out.
Educational activities will include the creation of an open-air ‘Green Classroom’ in Uzhhorod, the development of a textbook for interactive classes with students, the creation of two new academic courses by the Ukrainian side based on the Polish experience, the preparation of an open-air educational space in the botanical garden in Lublin.
All these innovative solutions, the implementation of the climate change adaptation pilot, and the establishment of cooperation, training, scientific and educational centres will influence the awareness of Ukrainian and Polish society. This will help to more effectively implement actions to protect our planet.
