Two villages in the preserved historical forests of the Eastern Carpathians – Majdan (PL) and Vyhoda (UA), share a history of authentic forest narrow-gauge railways. In the face of declining economic activity, migration and high level of unemployment, the tourism potential of these borderland locations has significant reserve for exploration and cultivation.
The partners have decided to address these challenges by increasing interest in the tourist offerings of Majdan and Vyhoda. The shed at Majdan station will be converted into a modern tourist service point with a multifunctional room – serving as a conference space and a permanent museum exhibition presenting the history of the railway. It will also be the venue for meetings, workshops and cross-border events. Additionally, an educational footbridge with a viewing platform in the treetops will be constructed. The existing track system of the Bieszczady Forest Railway will be renovated to accommodate bicycle rail trolleys creating another attraction as part of the project. The Ukrainian partner will be responsible for creating the Narrow Gauge Railway Station Museum in the village of Vyhoda. The narrow-gauge railway in Vyhoda, where the popular 'Carpathian Tram' operates, is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Kalush region. A traditional wood transportation route will be developed and marked as bicycle and walking trails within the project.
The project aims to increase tourist interest on both sides of the border enhancing the cross-border offerings for enthusiasts of historic forest railways. Furthermore, the partners plan to cooperate in developing this idea further.
