Project description

There is a lack of green areas in the Programme area. Furthermore, the quality of existing ones threatens biodiversity. In inhabited areas, buildings and paved surfaces heat up during the day and release some of the heat during the night. This phenomenon leads to the formation of urban heat islands. Furthermore, impermeable surfaces lead to the irretrievable loss of rainwater, which is particularly dangerous during the periods of recurrent droughts.

The partners of the CitiesOfGreen project decided that they would increase the area of green space and preserve biodiversity in the urbanised areas of the border region. On the Polish side, 9 pocket parks will be built in Siedlce city. On the Ukrainian side, 1 park will be renovated in the Horodok town and 1 park will be constructed in the Privilne commune. The installation of elements supporting environmental education (educational boards, birdhouses) is planned in the areas of the created parks. In addition, the partners will jointly develop an action plan for environmental education. They will also carry out a distribution of green plant cuttings (trees or shrubs, meadows with flowers) in their areas. This aims to engage the local community in better care for their environment. Siedlce will organise an eco-picnic to encourage residents to spend time together. During the event participants will have an opportunity to visit stands dedicated to nature conservation issues and the European Funds.

Residents of the project areas will have access to new green spaces that will improve their living conditions. Educational establishments will receive a document that forms the basis for modern environmental education. Meanwhile, the infrastructure created/revitalised as part of the project will be accessible to all interested parties, including people with disabilities.
