Project description

The San (PL) and Tisza (UA) rivers, flowing through the Lesko Commune (PL) and Khust Town (UA), are vital sources of life for local communities and play significant roles in the ecosystems of these regions. Effective protection of these rivers requires coordinated investments on both sides of the border. Mutual pollution adversely impacts the environment, particularly surface and groundwater, across the entire border area.

Partners will collaborate to improve the environment, including surface and subsurface water resources, in Lesko Commune and Khust Town. They plan to build and modernise sanitary sewage networks to reduce municipal wastewater pollution in areas of significant natural heritage. In Lesko, a section of the sanitary sewer network will be built, and 4 sewage pumping stations will be upgraded. Meanwhile, in Khust, new sewage networks will be constructed, existing networks will be rebuilt, and the sewage pumping station will be overhauled.
Educating local residents, especially the younger generation, about river protection is also a priority. As part of a water resource protection campaign, two parallel environmentally-focused events will be held in Lesko and Khust for volunteers, including a joint litter pick along the banks of the San and Tisza rivers. The project partners will also organise seminars to address common challenges in environmental protection, sewerage infrastructure, and water resource management.

This project will enhance the protection of rivers from pollution. Events promoting shared responsibility for these valuable water resources will encourage residents and tourists to actively protect the environment in the long term.
